La fête nationale ou Le 14 juillet

A few days ago, it was the 14th of July, the most important national holiday of France!  The French call it "le 14 juillet".

This day commemorates the storming of the Bastille, a prison, a symbol of power of the monarchy of King Louis XVI.  Once the prison was taken over by the people, a feeling of pride surged through all of France, since now, the people knew the monarchy could fall.  The 14th of July also marks the beginning of the French revolution and the end of the extreme monarchy.  One year later, the 14th of July 1790, in the champ-de-Mars in Paris, the king swore to the nation to agree to the terms of the Constitution- this was the Celebration of the Federation, a day of national union.  The 14th of July then references these two dates, July 14th, 1789 and July 14th, 1790.

The 14th of July is a patriotic moment celebrated throughout all of France.  Each year for the 14th of July, there is a great big military parade in the Champs-Elysées in Paris.  The event is also celebrated with fireworks that light up the sky.  Many towns organize popular balls to celebrate this national French holiday.

Il y a quelque jours, c'était le quatorze juillet, la fête nationale française!  En France, c'est "le 14 juillet."

Ce jour commémore la prise de la prison de la Bastille qui pour les Français de l'époque est le symbole du pouvoir de la monarchie du roi Louis XVI.  Dès que la prison à été prise par le peuple, un sens de fierté s'est propagé à travers toute la France car le peuple a compris que la monarchie pouvait s'écrouler.  Le 14 juillet 1789 marque ainsi le début de la Révolution française et la fin de la monarchie "absolue."  Un an après, le 14 juillet 1790, sur le Champ-de-Mars à Paris le roi a prêté serment à la Nation et à la Constitution - c'est la Fête de la Fédération, un jour d'union nationale.  Le "14 juillet" fait donc référence à ces deux dates, le 14 juillet 1789 et le 14 juillet 1790.

Le 14 juillet est un moment patriotique célébré à travers toute la France.  Chaque année pour le 14 juillet, il y a un grand défilé militaire sur les Champs-Elysées à Paris.  L'évènement est aussi célébré avec des feux d'artifices qui éclairent le ciel.  De très nombreuses villes organisent des bals populaires pour célébrer la fête nationale française.
